A Salmonella Bochum Outbreak Linked to Chocolate Spread Sickens 40 People in Germany

On April 16, 2026, the Robert Koch Institute reported a foodborne outbreak caused by Salmonella Bochum with 40 confirmed cases in several German states, concentrated mainly in the eastern part of the country and affecting primarily children under 15. One person over 60 years old died in connection with the outbreak. The epidemiological investigation linked the cases to consumption of a batch of hazelnut and cocoa spread, whose manufacturer had initiated a recall on April 9, 2026 after detecting Salmonella during its own internal quality control tests, days before authorities confirmed the epidemiological connection between the product and the reported human cases.
