Health AlertPoland Warns of Listeria monocytogenes in a Batch of Smoked Chicken Quarters Sold in a Supermarket Chain
Poland's Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) issued a public warning on September 29 over the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a batch of smoked chicken quarters. The bacterium was detected in one of the five samples analyzed. The manufacturer, a poultry company in the north of the country, notified the distributor, assessed the risk, applied immediate corrective measures to eliminate the causes of the contamination, and initiated the recall procedure.
The distributor, one of the largest supermarket chains in the country, withdrew the product from its stores and on September 23 blocked the remaining stock in its central warehouses, from where it will be sent for destruction as category 2 material. The GIS recommends not consuming the product from the affected batch and seeing a doctor if symptoms appear after eating it.
Listeriosis is a rare but serious disease that can cause fever, muscle pain and, in more severe cases, septicemia or meningitis. It mainly affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults and immunocompromised people. Ready-to-eat smoked chicken products are a classic vehicle for this pathogen: they are eaten without additional cooking, they have a long shelf life when refrigerated, and the bacterium can grow in the cold, so any post-smoking recontamination has no step left to eliminate it.
For TAAG, the case reinforces that environmental verification in the cooling, slicing and packaging rooms of smoked meats is as important as control of the finished product. A Listeria monitoring program on surfaces and batch analysis with rapid molecular methods allows the problem to be detected before the product enters the distribution chain and reduces the scope of any possible recall.
