Poland Warns of Listeria monocytogenes in 5 of 5 Samples of a Production of Regional Raw Milk Cheeses in Official Checks

Poland's Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) published on October 12, 2026 a public warning over the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a production of regional cheeses. The official analyses of the Veterinary Inspectorate were positive in 5 of 5 samples of the affected production. The warning covers eight presentations of the same batch, among natural and smoked varieties, some with added herbs or pepper, and in several sizes.

According to the district veterinarian's investigation, the entire production was sold to a single retail buyer and had already gone to market. The plant, a dairy in the south of the country, has no stock of that batch. On receiving the non-compliant result, the authority opened a proceeding at the plant and carried out an investigation; the producer initiated the recall of the entire production and the search for the origin of the contamination. The Sanitary Inspectorate collaborates with the Veterinary Inspectorate and monitors the recall in retail sale.

Raw milk cheeses are a known risk case for Listeria. The bacterium can be present in the dairy environment and survive ripening and smoking, and the consumption of these products without further cooking means that any contamination reaches the consumer directly. Listeriosis can be severe in pregnant women, older adults and immunocompromised people, so the authority recommends not consuming the products in the notice and seeing a doctor if there are symptoms.

A positive result in all samples suggests that the contamination was widespread in that production and not an isolated finding. For artisanal cheese makers, this reinforces the usefulness of frequently verifying the production environment, surfaces and in-process product. TAAG's Specio 1.4 kit detects Listeria monocytogenes in foods, beverages and surfaces, and the dairy sector is among its industries, so it can support that internal control; presumptive results must be confirmed with the reference method.
