Poland Issues a Public Warning Over Listeria monocytogenes in a Batch of Sliced Smoked Pork Belly Detected in the Manufacturer's Own Checks

Poland's Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) published on October 8, 2026 a public warning about a batch of smoked pork belly, sold in slices, in which Listeria monocytogenes was detected. The finding came from the producing establishment's own tests, which found the bacterium in 2 of 5 samples of the product. The administrative procedure is led by the Veterinary Inspectorate, which is the competent authority over meat establishments, while the Sanitary Inspectorate monitors the withdrawal of the batch in trade.

The manufacturer, a Polish processed meat producer, initiated the recall of the batch and began investigating the origin of the contamination. The competent district veterinarian opened a proceeding at the plant, carried out an investigation and supervises the corrective actions. It also issued a decision ordering the batch to be withdrawn from the market and suspending production of the questioned item until results confirming its safety are received. The wholesale distributor removed the product from the shelves, informed its customers and published a notice on its website; all the recalled product will be sent for disposal as category 2 material.

Listeriosis is a foodborne disease that can be severe in pregnant women, newborns, older adults and people with weakened defenses. The bacterium tolerates refrigeration, so ready-to-eat meat products, such as smoked slices eaten without further cooking, are a risk matrix: any contamination after heat treatment, for example during cutting and packing, can multiply throughout the shelf life. The authority recommends not consuming the indicated product and consulting a doctor if symptoms appear after having eaten it.

This case is an example of how self-control at the plant makes it possible to detect the problem before there are sick people: the manufacturer found the bacterium with its own sampling program. Manufacturers of ready-to-eat meats can verify their surfaces, cutting equipment and product with real-time PCR. TAAG's Specio 1.4 kit detects Listeria monocytogenes and its validation includes foods and surfaces, applicable to this type of verification; the result must always be confirmed with the reference method required by regulations.
