Product RecallIreland Recalls a Batch of Smoked Salmon from a Supermarket Chain Over Listeria monocytogenes
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) published on October 11, 2026 alert 2026.63, category 1 ("for action"), for the recall of a batch of smoked salmon in 40 and 150 gram packs, sold under the own brand of a supermarket chain. The reason is that the batch contains Listeria monocytogenes. The salmon is of Irish origin and the recall is carried out by the chain itself.
The FSAI advises consumers not to eat the affected batch. It asks retailers to remove it from sale and display recall notices at the point of sale. Manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and catering services also appear in the list of actions, although the notice does not detail specific instructions for them. Smoked salmon is one of the ready-to-eat foods most often associated with listeriosis, because it is not cooked before eating and the bacterium tolerates refrigeration temperatures.
According to the authority, in healthy people the infection can cause mild flu-like symptoms, with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In vulnerable groups, that is, pregnant women, infants, older adults and people with weakened defenses, it can be severe and lead to serious complications. What most complicates follow-up is the incubation: it lasts three weeks on average, but can range from three to 70 days, so a case can appear long after eating the product and having forgotten its origin.
For smoked fish producers, the case reinforces the importance of combining finished product testing with monitoring of the surfaces of the slicing and packing room, where the origin of the problem usually lies. TAAG's Specio 1.4 kit detects Listeria monocytogenes by real-time PCR with melting curve and is validated in foods and on living and inert surfaces, with application in the ready-to-eat industry. Smoked salmon is not listed as a specific matrix in its datasheet, so the association is indirect and relies mainly on verification of surfaces and in-process product.

Specio 1.4 detects Listeria monocytogenes and is validated in foods and on living and inert surfaces, with application in ready-to-eat products. The association is indirect because smoked salmon is not listed as a specific matrix and the news item describes a recall, not an analysis performed with the kit.
