Product RecallItaly Recalls a Packaged Vitello Tonnato Over Listeria monocytogenes
Italy's Ministry of Health published on October 12, 2026, on its portal of food product notices and recalls, the recall notice for a packaged 180-gram vitello tonnato, the cold dish of sliced cooked veal with tuna sauce. The recall template that accompanies the notice indicates as the reason the presence of Listeria monocytogenes and asks not to consume the product, which must be discarded or returned to the point of sale.
Vitello tonnato is a dish made with cooked meat, cooled and cut into slices, and served with a tuna-based sauce, so it is packaged, kept refrigerated and eaten without further cooking. Those stages give an opportunity for recontamination after the heat treatment, for example on cutting and packing surfaces, and Listeria tolerates refrigeration cold and can multiply during the shelf life.
Listeriosis can be severe in pregnant women, newborns, older adults and people with weakened defenses, and its incubation period is long, so symptoms can appear weeks after consumption. Anyone who has eaten the product and has fever, headache or muscle pain should consult a doctor and mention the consumption. The Ministry recalls that only the recalls and revocations published on its portal are official.
For makers of ready meals, the case reinforces that foods eaten without a final cooking step need verification of product and environment. TAAG's Specio 1.4 kit detects Listeria monocytogenes by real-time PCR with melting curve and its datasheet includes the ready-to-eat industry and living and inert surfaces. Vitello tonnato is not listed as a specific matrix, so the association is indirect and relies mainly on the verification of surfaces and process areas.

- Specio 1.4 L. monocytogenes (PCR en tiempo real con curva de melting - KAi)
Specio 1.4 detects Listeria monocytogenes in foods and surfaces, and its datasheet includes the ready-to-eat industry. The association is indirect because vitello tonnato is not listed as a specific matrix and the news item describes a recall, not an analysis performed with the kit.
