Wave of Fresh Egg Recalls for Salmonella Enteritidis Strikes Italy in Full Summer

Between July 27 and August 4, 2026, the Ministry of Health issued a series of recall notices for fresh eggs due to the risk of Salmonella enteritidis affecting different brands sold in Italy. The first, on July 27, corresponded to eggs from a poultry company in packages of 4 and 6 units, batch 1IT040VR006, with expiration August 4, 2026; on July 31 the same batch and expiration date reappeared under a supermarket chain. Days later, on August 3, the Ministry issued an independent notice for free-range eggs of a commercial brand, sold in a supermarket chain, also for Salmonella enteritidis.

The fact that the same batch number and expiration date repeat under different commercial brands within a few days is a direct consequence of how egg distribution operates in Italy: the same packing center dispatches product from one farm or a group of farms to multiple retail chains, which label it under their own private or distributor brands. This means that when the problem is at the source — the farm or the classification center — and not at the final packaging stage, the recall necessarily multiplies into apparently independent notices that actually describe a single contamination event.
