A Meat Processor Recalls Streichmettwurst Due to Listeria in Six German States

4 min

A meat processor & Co. announced the recall of several streichmettwurst items—a spreadable raw meat sausage typical of German charcuterie—including Schinken Streichmettwurst with garlic, Schinken Streichmettwurst without garlic, and Streichmettwurst grob without garlic, all from batch 631501 produced July 31, 2026 with consumption dates between September 1-10, 2026, due to possible Listeria monocytogenes detected in internal testing. The recall affected the states of Brandenburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. Authorities noted that Listeria infection can cause flu-like symptoms—fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea—with especially high risk for elderly persons, pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and newborns.

Streichmettwurst is, by definition, a product of raw minced pork cured through brief fermentation, with no subsequent cooking step before consumption spread on bread. This category of spreadable raw sausages represents one of the highest risk profiles for Listeria monocytogenes within German charcuterie, precisely because it combines a raw meat matrix—without thermal barrier—with a soft texture facilitating homogeneous bacterial multiplication throughout the product, unlike a whole-piece aged sausage where surface contamination remains more localized.

For TAAG, the streichmettwurst recall due to Listeria confirms that spreadable raw charcuterie demands a level of microbiological surveillance equivalent to the most sensitive dairy industry products, such as soft-paste cheeses: the absence of any subsequent heat treatment shifts all control responsibility to raw material quality and the hygiene of the grinding, mixing, and brief fermentation process.
