Chain Recalls Its Own Lepelkaasje Due to Listeria Risk

4 min

In first week of September 2026, a chain recalled its Lepelkaasje product (creamy spread cheese), marketed under its own brand, due to possible Listeria presence, in independent notice separate from equivalent recall published days before. Both recalls added to series of at least seven distinct food product alerts registered within two-week span, majority linked to Listeria in dairy products.

That two competing chains recalled practically identical format product under their respective own brands almost simultaneously suggests both source from same type of specialized dairy producer in this fresh spread cheese format, typical pattern in Dutch private label industry, where relatively small number of specialized manufacturers produce for multiple chains under distinct private labels. This does not necessarily imply both recalls share same contamination origin, but it does indicate fresh spread cheese segment of private label depends on concentrated supplier base, where hygiene problem in single facility can replicate in multiple chains' shelves simultaneously under different commercial names.

For TAAG, concentration of seven food alerts in two weeks, majority linked to Listeria in dairy, confirms this microorganism requires in Netherlands same priority attention already given in Germany, where it surpassed Salmonella as leading recall cause since 2024: pattern is not exclusive to one country but to European dairy industry of fresh and soft cheeses as whole.
