Discount Chain Recalls Seasoned Chicken Breast Fillet Due to Listeria

4 min

On April 16, 2025, produktwarnung.eu published the recall of the Ready chicken breast fillet product, seasoned and baked chicken breast fillet of approximately 250 grams, with minimum shelf life dates between April 18 and April 21, 2025, following the detection of Listeria monocytogenes during a routine control. Authorities noted that a health risk could not be ruled out with certainty, and recommended consumers not to consume the product. A discount chain allowed the return of the product in store with a refund, even without presenting proof of purchase, and warned that listeriosis represents a particularly serious risk for pregnant women.

That Listeria monocytogenes was detected in a chicken product already baked and seasoned, ready to eat directly without additional cooking, illustrates the same risk pattern documented in cooked products: the heat treatment during preparation—baking of the fillet—eliminates the initial bacterial load of the raw material, but does not protect the product from subsequent recontamination during cooling, cutting, packaging or storage, stages at which Listeria monocytogenes can persistently colonize the production environment.

This recall confirms that the category of poultry products ready to eat without additional cooking—in constant expansion in German retail distribution under proprietary brands such as Ready—requires the same level of post-cooking environmental monitoring already required in the industry, given that they share the same vulnerability profile: absence of a thermal barrier between the production plant and the consumer's plate.
