Mexico's Health Secretary Reports 33 Cyclosporiasis Cases, Ruling Out Active Outbreak

Mexico's Health Secretary reported on August 6, 2026 that Mexico recorded 33 cyclosporiasis cases between May 25 and July 31, distributed across 13 states, and ruled out the existence of an active outbreak. Samples taken from a packing facility in Guanajuato, investigated jointly with US authorities as part of the largest cyclosporiasis outbreak ever recorded in that country—more than 11,500 cases linked to iceberg lettuce—did not detect the presence of Cyclospora cayetanensis.

That Mexico reports domestic cyclosporiasis cases while cooperating in the investigation of a large-scale outbreak in the United States linked to a Mexican supplier allows distinguishing two phenomena worth not confusing: local parasite transmission within the country, associated with the same pattern of irrigation water contamination affecting any country with leafy vegetable production, and the specific responsibility of an exporting supplier in an outbreak detected in another market.
