Ireland Withdraws Cooked Ham Batches Over Possible Listeria monocytogenes

4 min

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) published on June 30, 2026 a withdrawal alert for several batches of cooked ham, marketed in different presentations and brands, for possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The alert instructed points of sale to immediately withdraw the product from shelves and asked consumers already having the ham at home not to consume it, even if the package remained closed and within the best-before date.

Cooked ham in slices belongs to the category of ready-to-eat deli products without post-cooking, a group of products that in recent years has featured several of the most significant Listeria withdrawals in Europe. The reason is structural: the deli is sliced and packaged after the heat treatment that eliminates the pathogen during ham cooking, so any contamination at that later stage — cutting blades, conveyor belts, packaging surfaces — reaches the consumer intact without any additional barrier to neutralize it.

Listeria monocytogenes has an environmental persistence capacity that distinguishes it from other foodborne pathogens: it colonizes drains, equipment joints and wet surfaces of deli plants, and can survive there for months despite routine cleaning protocols if these do not reach those critical points. This explains why findings in delicatessen products tend to repeat in the same plant over time, rather than being isolated events without relationship to each other.

For TAAG, this withdrawal confirms that cooked ham and deli products in general require Listeria monitoring centered on the plant environment — drains, cutting surfaces, packaging equipment — and not only on the finished product, because the bacteria colonizes those points before appearing in the final package, and sampling that arrives late to those environmental foci will continue finding the same problem batch after batch.
