Ireland Withdraws Alfalfa Sprouts Over Salmonella Risk in a Multinatinal Outbreak

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) ordered the withdrawal of batches of a commercial brand Super Sprouts Super Greens over possible presence of Salmonella, as part of a multinational Salmonella Bovismorbificans ST377 outbreak linked to germinated alfalfa seeds. According to the joint assessment by EFSA and ECDC, the outbreak totaled 109 confirmed cases between January and May 2026 in ten countries of the European Union and European Economic Area — including Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands and Spain — with 18 people hospitalized and two deaths registered in Finland.

Germinated seed sprouts — alfalfa, soy, radish — combine two factors that make them especially prone to microbial contamination: they are cultivated in warm and humid conditions that favor both seed germination and the multiplication of any pathogen present on its surface, and they are consumed raw, without any heat treatment to eliminate prior contamination. If the original seed carries Salmonella on its shell — contamination that can originate in the cultivation field or in storage — the germination process itself multiplies the bacterial load before the product reaches the point of sale.

That the outbreak reached ten countries with a common origin in the same seed batch illustrates the scale that a problem can take in a raw material distributed internationally before being germinated locally in different producers: the epidemiological tracing had to reconstruct a seed supply chain that crossed borders long before the first clinical case appeared.

For TAAG, this outbreak confirms that seed sprouts — regardless of the local supplier who grows and packages them — require microbiological verification of the seed of origin before germinating, since no downstream control on the germinated product can compensate for contamination that already multiplied during the germination process itself.
