Product RecallFrance Recalls Pepper Sold in Sachets After Salmonella Detection in a Supplier Sample
The official RappelConso portal published on October 7, 2026, the voluntary recall of pepper, a dry spice sold in 10-gram sachets, either individually or in boxes of four sachets. The reason is the presence of Salmonella spp.: according to the product listing, the supplier reported a microbiological risk after detecting a non-compliant sample. The product was sold throughout French territory, in stores and online, and is stored at room temperature.
The listing asks consumers not to consume the product and to contact customer service. The remedy is a free replacement of the product. This is a voluntary recall, without a prefectoral order, and the listing repeats the usual Salmonella recommendations, including seeing a doctor for diarrhea, vomiting and fever in the days following consumption.
Spices are a less intuitive matrix for Salmonella but well known in surveillance: they are dry products, they are often consumed without a sufficient cooking step when used to finish a dish or sprinkled on food, and the bacterium can survive for months in a dry product. Once the bacterium reaches the spice, microbial reduction treatment, such as steam, before packaging is the critical control point, which is why a finding in a supplier sample requires recalling product that has already been sold. Symptoms of salmonellosis appear between 6 and 72 hours after consumption, and the risk groups are young children, pregnant women, immunocompromised people and older adults.
For spice importers and packers, the case shows the value of verifying each incoming lot as well as the finished product. The TAAG Specio 1.1 kit detects Salmonella spp. by real-time PCR with melting curve analysis, with food, beverages and surfaces as validated matrices. The association is indirect: dry spices are not specifically mentioned among the kit's matrices, and the news item describes a recall, not an analysis performed with the kit.
