FDA Classifies Pistachio Butter Recall with Salmonella as Maximum Risk

4 min

A commercial brand recalled 6.7-ounce jars of pistachio butter—lot LB028ACP04—sold exclusively in stores across 19 states after routine inspection by the Florida Department of Agriculture detected Salmonella in three product jars. The finding occurred on July 17, 2026, and the FDA formally classified the recall as Class I—the category reserved for situations with reasonable probability of serious health consequences or death—on August 26, more than a month after the initial discovery. No associated illnesses have been reported.

That the finding came from routine sampling by a state authority, not from a clinical case or consumer complaint, is the most relevant aspect of this case: it means the contaminated product circulated in the market for weeks without any prior warning signal, and the only reason it was detected was the existence of an active surveillance program on low-water-activity products. The delay of more than a month between the finding and maximum risk classification also illustrates that the regulatory system operates with a lag that industry cannot afford to replicate in its own internal controls.

For TAAG, this case confirms that nut butters and pastes are a matrix with an apparent low-risk profile but high real persistence for Salmonella spp., and only a systematic sampling program of raw materials and finished product allows detecting contamination before it becomes a highest-category recall.
