CFIA Withdraws Pistachios due to Salmonella in Alberta and British Columbia

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) published on August 6, 2026 a withdrawal alert for Californian pistachios from a commercial brand, in presentations of 170 and 200 grams, elaborated by a commercial brand and sold in Alberta and British Columbia. The finding originated from analysis results from the CFIA itself, not from a consumer complaint or clinical case, and to date no associated diseases have been reported.

That the finding comes from direct authority sampling, with a production date of January 2025 and expiration date not until December 2027, exposes a particular characteristic of nuts as a risk matrix: their prolonged shelf life means that a contaminated lot can remain on the market for months or years before a surveillance program detects it, very different from the margin of days or weeks that a fresh product handles. Salmonella can survive in nuts of low water activity for equally prolonged periods without losing viability.

For TAAG, this case adds to a series of recent Salmonella findings in pistachios and other nuts in North America, and confirms that this product category —perceived as low-risk due to its dry and stable format— requires the same rigor of systematic sampling as any fresh matrix, precisely because the absence of free water does not eliminate the pathogen, it only keeps it latent for longer.
