United Kingdom Recalls Smoked Salmon and Prawn Cocktails in Northern Ireland Over Listeria monocytogenes, After the Recall Was Extended in Ireland

The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) published on October 21, 2026 a product recall notice in Northern Ireland due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in smoked salmon and prawn cocktails sold under the own brand of two supermarket chains. The notice covers nine products with all their use-by dates: six salmon products (smoked, applewood smoked and barbecue-style smoked, in 80- and 100-gram packs) and three 180-gram prawn cocktails.

The notice comes one day after the Irish authority extended a recall of similar products from those chains. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) published on October 11 alert 2026.63 for a batch of smoked salmon from one of them; on October 14, alert 2026.66 for five smoked salmon products with use-by dates of October 31 and November 4, and on October 20, alert 2026.67, category 1 ("for action"), which extended the recall to 18 products with all their dates: smoked and roast salmon, smoked mackerel and prawn cocktails, of Irish origin. In both territories consumers are asked not to eat the products, and the FSA adds that they can be returned for a refund.

Smoked salmon and prawn cocktails share the profile that favors Listeria monocytogenes: they are eaten without cooking, kept refrigerated for weeks and go through slicing or sauce-mixing stages in which the bacterium can pass from surfaces to the product; in addition, it tolerates salt and grows under refrigeration. According to the FSA, the infection is usually similar to flu, but in rare cases it causes serious complications such as meningitis; the most vulnerable are people over 65, pregnant women and their babies, infants under one month old and people with weakened immune systems. The FSAI notes that incubation lasts three weeks on average, with a range of 3 to 70 days.

The fact that the recall went in ten days from one batch to all use-by dates, and from one product to several species and formats, is the usual response when persistent contamination at the plant cannot be ruled out; the authorities have not reported the source. For ready-to-eat seafood processors, it is advisable to combine finished product testing with environmental monitoring of slicing and packing lines. TAAG's Ampliora 2.3 kit detects Listeria spp. and L. monocytogenes by real-time PCR in foods and surfaces, and its datasheet includes the fishing and aquaculture and ready-to-eat industries; smoked salmon and prawn cocktails are not listed as specific matrices, so the association is indirect. Presumptive results must be confirmed with the reference method.

Ampliora 2.3 detects Listeria spp. and L. monocytogenes and its datasheet includes the fishing and aquaculture and ready-to-eat industries, with application in foods and living and inert surfaces. The association is indirect because smoked salmon and prawn cocktails are not listed as specific matrices and the news item describes a recall, not an analysis performed with the kit.
