United Kingdom Issues an Action Alert to Recall Ukrainian Eggs with Salmonella Enteritidis Linked to 36 Cases in England

The United Kingdom's Food Standards Agency (FSA) published on October 10, 2026 an alert "for action" addressed to businesses and consumers who have bought shell eggs from an establishment in Ukraine. The alert asks to withdraw from the market all eggs bearing that establishment's code and to recover them from consumers where there were retail sales, because Salmonella Enteritidis was found in some of the eggs supplied. The FSA warns that other eggs from the same establishment could be affected and that they should not be consumed.

The finding arises from the ongoing investigation of an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis believed to be linked to imported eggs. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) detected the bacterium in egg samples from a Ukrainian supplier and carried out whole genome sequencing. The result showed that this strain does not match the outbreak strains currently under investigation, but it is associated with 36 cases of salmonellosis reported in England in 2026. the FSA Head of Incidents stressed that eggs produced in the United Kingdom are not affected and that those from large supermarkets are British.

The affected eggs are not sold in large chains: most circulate through the catering supply chain, although some may reach small shops. The FSA advises checking the code stamped on the shell and, if it matches the one in the alert, discarding them at home. Businesses must review their supply chains, bear in mind that the eggs may have been repacked by other UK businesses with different packer details, stop using and selling them and not divert them to further processing. UKHSA's chief epidemiologist recalled that most infections resolve within a few days, but can cause serious illness in young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with weakened defenses.

For the egg industry and egg-based products, the notice insists on a practical point: shell traceability and control of imported raw material. The FSA maintains its general advice that eggs that are well cooked and handled hygienically pose no risk, and that babies, young children, pregnant women and older adults should only eat raw or lightly cooked eggs if they carry a private quality seal or come from an industry assurance scheme. TAAG's Elevia 1.1 kit detects Salmonella spp. by RT-qPCR and its datasheet includes the egg industry and the pasteurized liquid egg matrix; shell egg is not listed as a validated matrix, so the association is indirect and would require validating the matrix.

Elevia 1.1 detects Salmonella spp. and its datasheet includes the egg industry and the pasteurized liquid egg matrix. The association is indirect because shell egg is not listed as a validated matrix and the news item describes an alert, not an analysis performed with the kit.
