Hong Kong Urges the Public Not to Consume a Salad and a Pistachio Pesto Imported from the United Kingdom Over Suspected Salmonella

Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety (CFS) urged the public on October 9 not to consume two prepackaged products imported from the United Kingdom: a salad with nuts and seeds, and a pistachio pesto. The reason is possible contamination with Salmonella. The CFS received notifications from the United Kingdom's Food Standards Agency and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, which reported that the products could be contaminated and were being withdrawn from the market. The CFS communication does not detail the underlying cause beyond the suspicion of Salmonella.

Following those notifications, the CFS verified that the importer had brought in and sold the products in Hong Kong. The importer suspended sales, removed the products from the shelves and began the market recall under the agency's instructions, which also alerted the sector. The CFS recommended that consumers stop eating the affected batches and that traders stop using or selling them immediately. The investigation continues and the importer set up an inquiry line for those who have the product at home.

The CFS recalls that Salmonella infection can cause fever and gastrointestinal discomfort such as vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The effects can be more severe in infants, young children, older people and the immunocompromised, and can even be fatal. The episode illustrates how recall notices travel between authorities: an alert issued in Europe triggers checks in an Asian market within days, and the importer's speed in tracing what it sold is what limits exposure.

For manufacturers of sauces, spreads and ready-to-eat salads, a risk of this type is managed with verification of dry raw materials, such as nuts and seeds, and with environmental monitoring. TAAG offers Specio 1.1, a real-time PCR with melting curve that detects Salmonella spp. in foods and surfaces, and whose industries include ready-to-eat foods. The association is indirect: the kit does not have these matrices specifically validated, so it would serve as support for verifying raw materials and surfaces, not as confirmation of this case.
