Product RecallGermany Warns of Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) in Soft Cheese from an Organic Cheesemaker in Bavaria Distributed in Three States
The German federal food alert portal lebensmittelwarnung.de published on October 7, 2026 a market withdrawal of a soft cheese made by an organic cheesemaker in the German state of Bavaria. The cause is a laboratory finding: the product contained pathogenic Escherichia coli of the EHEC group, that is, enterohemorrhagic E. coli, also called Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). The warning was issued by the Bavarian authority and was published and updated the same day.
According to the current status of the notice, the cheese reached stores in three federal states: Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Berlin. The company asks consumers not to eat the product and to return it to the point of sale, where the price is refunded even without presenting the proof of purchase.
The portal details the health risks. According to the manufacturer, EHEC infection can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, generally between one and eight days after consumption, and it can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a condition that damages the kidneys and mainly affects young children. Older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems make up the highest-risk group, so they are advised to exercise extreme caution and to see a doctor if symptoms appear after consuming the product.
The case shows why soft and ripened cheeses require rigorous microbiological control. STEC bacteria have their main reservoir in cattle, and a very low infectious dose is enough to cause disease. Because these cheeses are consumed without subsequent cooking, any contamination not detected before sale reaches the consumer intact. In Germany, notices of this type are communicated through the joint portal of the Federation and the states, which gathers alerts from regional authorities and disseminates them centrally so that recalls reach buyers across the country.

- Matrix:
- Soft cheese from an organic cheesemaker
- Related kit:
- Ampliora 3.9 (F39) E. coli STEC, E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella spp. (PCR en tiempo real - Mila)
Ampliora 3.9 detects STEC, E. coli O157:H7, and Salmonella spp., so it covers the microorganism in the notice. The association is indirect because the matrices validated in its datasheet are leafy vegetables (cabbage, lettuce, spinach, mixed leafy greens) and ground beef, and cheese does not appear among them; in addition, the news reports an authority's laboratory finding, not an analysis performed with the kit.
