Product RecallFrance Recalls Prepackaged Minced Chicken Fillets Due to Suspected Salmonella Typhimurium
RappelConso, France's official product recall portal, published on October 1 the recall of minced-style chicken fillets, pre-packaged in 180-gram plastic trays. This is a voluntary recall, not ordered by the authority. The reason is suspected contamination with Salmonella Typhimurium. It was sold at retailers throughout France between September 22 and 26.
The notice asks consumers not to eat the product and to return it to the point of sale, where a refund is offered, or destroy it. The authorities remind consumers that symptoms, which include diarrhea, vomiting, fever and headache, appear between 6 and 72 hours after ingestion, and that children, pregnant women, elderly people and immunocompromised people are the most at risk.
Minced or diced poultry is a delicate matrix, because the chopping process exposes more surface area and distributes any contamination from the batch. Salmonella Typhimurium is one of the most common serotypes in poultry and pigs, and its presence in pre-packaged raw product requires cooking the meat to at least 65 °C at the center, as the notice itself states, and avoiding cross-contamination in the home kitchen.
For TAAG, the episode reinforces the importance of verifying Salmonella in raw poultry meat on the production line and before releasing the batch, when the product has not yet reached points of sale. Real-time PCR methods, which deliver results in a few hours, allow a quick decision on whether to hold a batch and reduce the window in which a contaminated product can reach the consumer.
