France Recalls Farmhouse Raw-Milk Camembert Over Listeria monocytogenes

On October 1, RappelConso published the recall of a farmhouse camembert made with raw milk, due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The cheese was distributed throughout France through three wholesalers, located in Rungis, Carvin and Gacé, and sold on September 17 and 18. The notice lists a single batch whose use-by date has not yet passed, which means that the product may still be in home refrigerators and at points of sale.

The authority asks consumers to stop eating the cheese. It reminds them that listeriosis can take up to eight weeks to appear and that pregnant women, older adults, and immunocompromised people should watch for fever, headache, and muscle aches. Those who have already eaten it and develop these symptoms should consult a doctor, because in pregnant women the infection can affect the fetus.

Soft raw-milk cheeses are a typical Listeria risk: their moisture, their near-neutral pH and their long cold ripening allow the bacterium to survive and multiply, even at refrigeration temperatures. Since the cheese does not receive a heat treatment that eliminates the pathogen, control depends on the quality of the milk, the hygiene of the molding and ripening room, and the sampling of the product and surfaces.

For TAAG, the case confirms that environmental monitoring of Listeria in cheese factories, both artisanal and industrial, is the most effective defense. Rapid molecular analysis of Listeria monocytogenes on surfaces, molds, brines, and finished product allows a source of contamination to be corrected before it contaminates multiple batches, and supports hold decisions when a result comes back positive.
