Product Recall

Belgium Recalls French Camembert Cheese over Possible Shiga Toxin-Producing E. coli

An importer, in coordination with the Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (AFSCA), recalled a 250-gram French Camembert cheese, presented in a wooden box, on October 2, 2026, due to possible presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). The product was sold at a single point of sale in the country. The notice asks consumers who purchased it not to eat it and to return it.

The distribution scope is limited, but the notice is published as a consumer-level recall because the cheese is a product eaten without cooking and the bacterium can cause a serious disease. The notification does not report associated cases or the concentration detected. It is the second Belgian notice for possible STEC in a few days: on September 30, a frozen parsley had been recalled for the same reason.

STEC strains release toxins that damage the intestinal lining and, in some cases, the kidneys. The most serious complication is hemolytic uremic syndrome, which mainly affects young children and older adults. The notice does not indicate whether the cheese was made with raw or pasteurized milk or where the contamination originated. In general, soft cheeses with a rind can be a risk matrix for STEC when the starting milk does not receive sufficient heat treatment or when there is post-processing contamination, because their pH and moisture allow the bacterium to survive during ripening. Cattle are the main reservoir of STEC, and control of the source milk and of cheesemaking surfaces is the main line of defense.

For cheesemakers, importers, and laboratories, the case confirms the need to test raw milk and finished product in soft cheeses, and to verify every imported lot. The TAAG Ampliora 3.9 kit detects STEC, E. coli O157:H7, and Salmonella spp. by real-time PCR, but its validated matrices are leafy vegetables and ground beef, not cheese, so the association is indirect and the kit requires its own validation in the dairy matrix.
