United Kingdom Recalls Five Ready-to-Eat Products Because Salmonella Was Found in the Pistachios Used as an Ingredient

The United Kingdom's Food Standards Agency (FSA) published alert FSA-PRIN-48-2026 on October 8, 2026. The prepared-food manufacturer that makes the products is recalling five items because Salmonella was found in the pistachios used as an ingredient. The five products are two ready chicken dishes with pilaf rice and nuts, two nut products from a healthy-eating line and a pistachio pesto. They were sold at two retail chains, one of them under a brand sold exclusively in its stores.

The FSA reports that the manufacturer will place recall notices at all points of sale that received the products, with the explanation of the reason and instructions for customers. One of the chains specifies that only the date codes shown in the notice are affected and that no other product in its range is related to the recall. On the same day, Ireland's FSAI published an alert for ready-to-eat products with pistachios as an ingredient, with the same ingredient as the cause.

The advice to consumers is not to eat the products and to return them to the store where they were bought, where a full refund is given without the need to present the receipt. The FSA recalls that the symptoms of salmonellosis usually include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps, and that anyone who has them should stay away from work, school or nursery until 48 hours after they disappear, so as not to infect other people.

The case shows how a single dry ingredient can trigger a multiple recall. Nuts do not allow Salmonella to multiply, but the bacterium survives in them for a long time and passes into dishes that are eaten without a final step that eliminates it. That is why control of the ingredient at reception weighs as much as that of the finished product. TAAG's Elevia 1.1 kit detects Salmonella spp. by RT-qPCR and its datasheet includes low-moisture matrices, such as chocolate with hazelnut filling, hazelnut and cocoa cream and chocolate bar with peanuts, as well as stainless steel surfaces. Pistachio is not among the validated matrices, so its use here would be partial support that would require validating the matrix.

Microorganism:

Pistachios (ingredient) and ready-to-eat dishes that contain them
Related kit:
Elevia 1.1 Salmonella spp. (RT-qPCR - AiGOR)

Elevia 1.1 detects Salmonella spp. and its datasheet at taag.bio includes low-moisture matrices such as chocolate with hazelnut filling, hazelnut and cocoa cream, and chocolate bar with peanuts. The association is indirect because pistachio and the ready-to-eat dishes that contain it are not listed as validated matrices.
