Product Recall

Luxembourg Issues Alert for Possible Salmonella in Organic Ground Coriander Sold in 30-Gram Sachets

Luxembourg's food safety authority published on October 13, 2026, on its alerts portal and through the national LU-Alert system, a recall of organic ground coriander, sold in 30-gram sachets, due to possible Salmonella contamination. According to the alert, the product was distributed in points of sale across the Grand Duchy. The notice will remain visible for one week, although the note itself clarifies that this date only indicates the display period and that the product remains non-compliant after it.

The reason, expressed as possible presence, is common in precautionary recalls of spices: the finding may come from an official test or a notification from another country, and the authority withdraws the product without waiting for confirmation of each package. The alert asks consumers not to eat the product. Salmonellosis causes diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain between 6 and 72 hours after eating contaminated food, with higher risk in young children, pregnant women, immunocompromised people and older adults.

Ground spices are dry foods that are consumed raw or with only a brief cooking, and Salmonella can persist in them for months. The finding is also relevant because of how they are used: ground coriander is added at the end to stews, dressings and dishes that are already prepared, which can nullify the effect of cooking. Microbial reduction with steam or another validated treatment before packaging, and batch verification of the finished product, are the critical controls.

For importers and packers of spices, the recall shows the value of having their own batch verification. TAAG's Specio 1.1 kit detects Salmonella spp. by real-time PCR with melting curve, with food, beverages and surfaces as validated matrices. The link is indirect: ground spices are not specifically named among the kit's matrices, and the notice describes a recall, not an analysis done with it.
