France Recalls an Organic Apple Juice Over Patulin, a Mycotoxin

The official French portal RappelConso, which gathers consumer product recalls, published on October 9, 2026 the notice of a voluntary recall of organic apple juice, sold in 20-centiliter cartons and in six-packs. The reason is the presence of mycotoxins, specifically patulin. The recall is carried out by a supermarket chain that sold it throughout French territory, without a prefectural order, and the product is stored at room temperature, which makes it easy for it to remain in household pantries.

Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by microscopic fungi, mainly of the genus Penicillium, which can develop on damaged or poorly stored fruit before pressing. It is the classic contaminant of apple juices and compotes, because rotten or bruised fruit is the entry point. The notice explains that this type of substance can form on plants during cultivation or storage, and that the health risk appears with substantial and repeated consumption, not with a single intake.

Consumers are asked to stop consuming the product and return it to the point of sale, where a refund applies. The notice includes a customer service phone number and reminds that, if the product is still on sale in any store, it can be reported to the public platform SignalConso. Since the juice is sold unrefrigerated and consumed over weeks, it is likely that part of the volume had already left the points of sale before the notice.

For the juice and nectar industry, the case is a reminder that patulin control starts at fruit reception: selecting sound apples, removing damaged ones and chemical analysis of the batch, with maximum limits set by European regulations, which are stricter for foods intended for infants and young children. This is a chemical hazard measured by chromatography, not PCR, so TAAG's kits, which detect microorganisms, do not apply to this recall; they do, however, help monitor microbial contamination on the same production line.
